State College, Pa. — Born and raised in the heart of State College, Mackenzie Lee is a freshman at State College Area High School who's already making waves in the community through her dedication to volunteering.

Her journey into volunteering began with a simple desire to support her cousin, a seasoned IRONMAN® participant, who flew in from California for a race. Inspired by her stories and the vibrant atmosphere of the event, Mackenzie knew she wanted to be more than just a spectator.

Last year marked her debut as a volunteer alongside her grandparents. Their day started in the early hours, arriving at 3:30 AM to assist racers boarding buses from Beaver Stadium to Sayers Dam. Despite the early start, their enthusiasm was palpable as they greeted athletes and provided genuine smiles.

From there, they drove to Mill Hall for their next assignment at the bike aid station. Working alongside fellow volunteers, they navigated the fast-paced environment, distributing water and energy foods to cyclists in need. Despite the challenges of the bustling station, Mackenzie found fulfillment in contributing to the athletes' journey.

“The number of athletes who showed their appreciation at all the stations, and even when they saw someone with a volunteer shirt, was surprising,’ Mackenzie recalls, reflecting on her experience. ‘I was proud to be a part of their journey.’

Now gearing up for her second year of volunteering, Mackenzie is thrilled to take on the role of captain at the bus loading station. Reflecting on her past experience, she speaks of the unexpected gratitude shown by athletes and the sense of pride in being part of their journey.

For Mackenzie, volunteering isn't just about lending a hand—it's about becoming an integral part of an unforgettable experience for athletes and spectators alike. With her passion and dedication, she embodies the spirit of community and service, leaving a lasting impact on the IRONMAN® event and beyond.
