Downtown State College is set to shift into high gear on July 26, as it hosts the inaugural State College Criterium Championship

STATE COLLEGE, PA - This exciting new event will bring high-level cycling to the heart of town, with the fast-paced format of a criterium race providing non-stop action for both participants and spectators. Unlike traditional long-distance cycling events, criteriums take place on short, closed-loop courses—perfect for urban centers like State College. Riders will complete numerous laps of a 0.7-mile circuit that winds through downtown streets, including East Beaver Avenue, South Pugh Street, East Foster Avenue, and South Garner Street.

Organized by Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance, the event doubles as the Pennsylvania State Criterium Championships for elite and masters-level cyclists. The day’s schedule is packed with races for various categories, starting in the morning and culminating in the elite women’s and men’s races at 3:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. respectively. Top finishers will not only claim the state title but also take home cash prizes—$500 for the women’s champion and $750 for the men’s.

In addition to the competitive action, the Criterium features a free kids’ race, inviting young cyclists in grades K through 6 to get in on the fun with age-appropriate routes and a memorable, encouraging environment. Local businesses and organizations are also rallying behind the event. Mount Nittany Health will provide medical support, and The Bike Roost will offer neutral mechanical assistance throughout the day.
