Rise to the Challenge of Rothrock
ABOUT ROTHROCK BY UTMB™
Rothrock by UTMB™ is the newest stop on the UTMB World Series and the second event on the Eastern side of the United States, joining Grindstone Running Festival by UTMB®. The inaugural edition will take place May 16–17, 2026 in Rothrock State Forest, just outside State College, Pennsylvania (Happy Valley).
The event features 50km and 25km distances that build on the legacy of the Rothrock Trail Challenge, established in 2009. That race became known for its rugged, community-driven atmosphere and its iconic tagline: “For those about to Rothrock, we salute you!” The 25km course continues along the classic Rothrock Trail Challenge route, while the new 50km course expands the adventure across even more of the forest’s wild terrain.
Working closely with the original race management team, UTMB World Series is committed to honoring Rothrock’s heritage while bringing a world-class trail running experience to the heart of Pennsylvania.
CHAMPIONING COMMUNITY
Through UTMB Cares, the goal is to create a meaningful impact by supporting and protecting the natural environments that host UTMB trail events. UTMB Cares operates as a program of The IRONMAN Foundation, which has contributed more than $55 million since 2003 to over 10,000 nonprofit organizations at the local, regional, national, and global levels. This includes a $50,000 grant dedicated to clean-up and restoration of the Western States Trail, a route enjoyed by participants of The Canyons Endurance Runs by UTMB®, through a partnership with the Western States Endurance Run and The Tevis Cup. The initiative continues to focus on engaging communities and preserving race environments through dedicated grant funding and volunteer-driven efforts.
A key beneficiary is the Rothrock Trail Alliance, whose volunteers work year-round to maintain and improve the forest’s rugged trail network. Their efforts ensure that Rothrock remains accessible, safe, and inspiring for runners, hikers, and outdoor enthusiasts.

Runners from across the country and around the world are heading to Central Pennsylvania to test themselves on our trails. As a volunteer, you’ll be part of the team that welcomes them to our trails and brings it all together.
Our volunteers are the energy behind every mile - the early risers, the vibe keepers, the behind-the-scenes heroes who make the entire experience possible. Whether you’re helping with trail work, course setup, manning an aid station, directing runners on the trail, or welcoming athletes at the finish line, your role truly matters. You’ll help show off what makes Central PA special: rugged beauty, welcoming community, and unforgettable outdoor experiences.
No prior experience needed - just a positive attitude and a willingness to jump in. We have a variety of roles available and would love to find the right fit for you.
