First-Ever State College Criterium Brought Fast-Paced Racing Downtown
STATE COLLEGE, PA BY EVAN HALFEN- Downtown State College came alive on Saturday, July 26, as more than 250 cyclists competed in the inaugural State College Criterium, hosted by the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance. The event, sanctioned by USA Cycling, also served as the Pennsylvania State Championship for Elite and Masters categories.
Riders raced on a 0.7-mile closed loop through downtown streets, navigating sharp turns and sprint sections at speeds over 25 mph. Despite some weather delays, races stayed on track and drew enthusiastic crowds and community support. Local businesses embraced the action, with extended patios and specials for race-goers.
In the women’s elite race, Kimberly Stoveld claimed victory with a dominant solo effort, while Andrew Wolfe won the men’s elite division in a sprint finish. Volunteers from groups like the Penn State Cycling Team and CentreBike helped bring the event to life.
Organizers and community leaders praised the event’s energy and economic impact, expressing hope it becomes an annual tradition in Happy Valley.
