Fast-paced cycling entertainment coming to Happy Valley, PA
Happy Valley, PA | May 21, 2025 – The Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance (HVSEA) is bringing fast-paced, competitive cycling action to downtown State College on Saturday, July 26 with the inaugural Happy Valley Cycling State College Criterium.
HVSEA Executive Director Eric Engelbarts said the USA Cycling sanctioned event will serve as the Pennsylvania State Criterium Elite and Masters Division Championships, which will bring thrilling cycling action to a downtown closed-loop course.
“The Elite and Masters Criterium championships bring together the best riders in Pennsylvania to compete against their peers for state titles and medals,” said Pennsylvania Cycling Association President David Mitchell. “Riders know they will have to be at their best to come out on top. Victories don’t come easy, but a state title is very coveted and well earned.”
Engelbarts said criterium racing is exciting to watch.
“It requires quick acceleration, tactical positioning and sharp cornering skills. That makes it very spectator friendly. It’s elite cycling and entertainment in one memorable event,” he noted.
Engelbarts said spectators will have great views of the race as elite criterium cyclists navigate the course that runs from E. Beaver Ave. to S. Pugh St. to E. Forester Ave to S. Garner St.
State College Downtown Improvement District Executive Director Lee Anne Jeffries said the community is thrilled to support the unique event in the heart of Happy Valley.
"It’s a perfect fit for our outdoor, bike-loving community,” she said. “Our local businesses are excited to be part of the action, with racers and fans bringing energy and momentum right to their front doors."
Engelbarts said a children’s fun race for kids grades K-6 will take place at 2:45 p.m. prior to the elite division, giving youngsters in the community a chance to be part of the action. There will be a shorter route for K-2, and a slightly longer route for grades 3-6. Registration for the children’s race is free and available at www.hvsea.com/kids-race.
“Kids can grab their bike and enjoy navigating the course,” he said.
The course opens at 8 a.m. for preview by early racers, with racing action beginning at 9 a.m.
“The criterium promises to be a fun, family friendly day. It’s been great working with Marilyn and all parties who helped make the event possible” Engelbarts said. “The Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance especially wants to thank State College Borough for approving the downtown course.”
“The Borough of State College is proud to support this inaugural event,” said State College Borough Manager Tom Fountaine. “Community members and visitors alike will have the opportunity to explore the scenic views and experience for themselves why the League of American Bicyclists has given the Centre Region a silver level recognition as a Bicycle Friendly Community.”
Engelbarts said with top cyclists competing for a state title, the goal is to create an electric atmosphere along the course.
“We want to provide an unforgettable experience for racers and spectators alike,” he said. “We invite people who live along the route and others to join us for an exciting day of elite competition and community celebration.”
Mount Nittany Health will serve as the official medical provider for the event. The Bike Roost will provide neutral support. Criterium sponsorship opportunities are available.
