Fast-paced cycling event headed to downtown State College. What to know

By Josh Moyer STATE COLLEGE, PA—For the first time, Downtown State College will host a high-speed cycling event on July 26—the Happy Valley Cycling State College Criterium, which also serves as the Pennsylvania State Criterium Championships for elite and masters divisions. State College will host its first-ever criterium race on July 26 with the Happy Valley Cycling State College Criterium, a USA Cycling-sanctioned event featuring a fast-paced, 0.7-mile closed loop through the heart of town.

Starting at 9 a.m., up to 500 cyclists will compete in nine races across multiple categories, with elite-level competition beginning at 3:30 p.m. Organizers hope the community lines the streets to take in the high-speed action and tight corners that define criterium racing.

Unlike traditional road races, criteriums are timed, with riders eliminated if lapped and a final sprint determining the winner. The day also includes a free kids’ race at 2:30 p.m., and top elite racers will compete for cash prizes, $750 for the top man and $500 for the top woman, along with coveted state titles.

Registration is open through July 23, with fees ranging from free to $65. Riders need a USA Cycling license, with one-day licenses available at the event.

Organized by the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance, with support from the Downtown State College Improvement District and State College Borough, the event promises high energy for cyclists and spectators
