Criterium Cycling Championship Event Coming to Downtown State College
By Geoff Rushton STATE COLLEGE, PA—For the first time, Downtown State College will host a high-speed cycling event on July 26—the Happy Valley Cycling State College Criterium, which also serves as the Pennsylvania State Criterium Championships for elite and masters divisions.
Unlike traditional road races, criteriums are fast, looped races held on closed urban courses. “It requires quick acceleration, tactical positioning and sharp cornering skills,” said Eric Engelbarts, HVSEA executive director. “It’s elite cycling and entertainment in one memorable event.”
The USA Cycling-sanctioned race runs through East Beaver Ave, South Pugh, East Foster, and South Garner Streets, offering close-up views for spectators.
Races begin at 9 a.m., culminating with the women’s elite title race at 3:30 p.m. and the men’s at 4:45 p.m., with cash prizes of $500 and $750. A free kids' race starts at 2:45 p.m.
“A state title is very coveted and well earned,” said David Mitchell, President of the Pennsylvania Cycling Association.
Registration is open until July 23, with discounts through July 1.
Organized by HVSEA with support from DSCID and State College Borough, the event is expected to bring energy downtown.
